Knot Groups and Slice Conditions
We introduce the notions of “k-connected-slice” and “π1-slice”, interpolating between “homotopy ribbon” and “slice”. We show that every high-dimensional knot group π is the group of an (n− 1)-connected-slice n-knot for all n ≥ 3. However if π is the group of an n-connected-slice n-knot the augmentation ideal I(π) must have deficiency 1 as a module. If moreover n = 2 and π is finitely generated ...
متن کاملQuantum Groups and Knot Invariants
Definition 1.1. Informally, a knot is obtained by gluing together the endpoints of a shoelace in R3, considered up to isotopy (but remembering orientation). A link is the same as a knot, but multiple shoelaces are allowed. A tangle consists of (oriented) shoelaces and two parallel sticks, an upper and a lower, which we may glue some endpoints to. In addition, we assign + and − signs to the poin...
متن کاملOn Generalized Knot Groups
Generalized knot groups Gn(K) were introduced first by Wada and Kelly independently. The classical knot group is the first one G1(K) in this series of finitely presented groups. For each natural number n, G1(K) is a subgroup of Gn(K) so the generalized knot groups can be thought of as extensions of the classical knot group. For the square knot SK and the granny knot GK, we have an isomorphism G...
متن کاملVirtual Knot Groups
Virtual knots, defined by Kauffman, provide a natural generalization of classical knots. Most invariants of knots extend in a natural way to give invariants of virtual knots. In this paper we study the fundamental groups of virtual knots and observe several new and unexpected phenomena. In the classical setting, if the longitude of a knot is trivial in the knot group then the group is infinite ...
متن کاملHomomorphisms of Knot Groups on Finite Groups
We describe trial and error computer programs for finding certain homomorphisms of a knot group on a special projective group LF(2, p), p prime, and programs to evaluate #i(3TC ; Z) where 9TC is a finitely sheeted branched covering space of S3 associated with such a homomorphism. These programs have been applied to several collections of examples, in particular to the Kinoshita-Terasaka knots, ...
